Yahoo! strengthens video service as it snaps up Jumpcut

Yahoo! has acquired online video-sharing and editing web site Jumpcut, in an attempt to enhance its Yahoo Video service and strengthen its community.

The deal gives Yahoo! users the ability to create "multimedia mashups" of video and other media. The company will also work with Yahoo!'s media and advertising partners to create high-quality movie and video content.

Jumpcut said: "Joining forces with Yahoo! Video will provide the resources to bring Jumpcut users and our partners more great social media experiences. As part of Yahoo! we'll be working on bringing video editing and remixing to everyone with an Internet connection."

The acquisition is the latest move by the internet media giant to capture a share in the booming market of user-generated content web sites.

A video about Jumpcut's plan to merge with Yahoo! can be viewed here.

Fallon's giant ‘snowball’ of doom for Travelers

San Francisco’s a great spot for shooting certain types of ads—ones involving millions of little bouncing colored balls, for example.

It’s also good for showing a guy tripping and falling, rolling down a steep hill, accumulating all sorts of debris, and becoming part of a giant, indestructible snowball of crap that’s hurtling uncontrollably toward an inevitable violent end.

In other words, a TV commercial by Fallon for Travelers. Few insurance ads are as fun as this.

Raindance prepares to face the music

Music documentaries of various guises are set to dominate the 14th Raindance film festival in London, which opens tomorrow with a screening of the acclaimed Brothers of the Head.

Directed by Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe, the film is a faux-documentary that follows the attempts of a 1970s promoter to conjure conjoined twins into a rock'n'roll sensation. Brothers of the Head won the Michael Powell award for best new British feature at last month's Edinburgh film festival.

More straightforward interpretations of the 'rockumentary' genre are provided by Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man, Jonathan Demme's Neil Young concert film Heart of Gold and Too Tough to Die: A Tribute to Johnny Ramone.

The Raindance film festival has built a reputation as a training ground for new film-makers and a platform for independent productions. In previous years both Memento and The Blair Witch Project were first unveiled at the event.

The 14th Raindance film festival runs September 27-October 8. Further details at raindancefilmfestival.org.
